Choose Coordinating Furniture

By Richard Hollins

When it comes to buying new furniture for your home, you must make sure that you do not fall into the trap that the sales assistants will usually set. Most customers will look around for a number of items of furniture once they have found the first one. Because most salespeople will earn commission on whatever they sell, they are going to try and get you to buy as much as possible. The easiest way for them to achieve this is by persuading you to buy other items of furniture in the same range as the original piece that you are buying.

Whilst that is the simplest route for the sales assistant, the customer may be better served by choosing co-ordinating pieces of furniture. The following are just a few reasons why it is better to avoid matching furniture:

If you have bought the furniture more than a couple of years ago and then one item gets damaged, you may find it very difficult to replace that one item.

Matching furniture can "date" very quickly, and although you may have thought that it was beautiful three years ago your style may have changed completely.

When you tire of your furniture, you could find that replacing it all is very expensive.

Choose several different pieces of furniture for the room which co-ordinate in style possibly in the same colour or by using the same wood. In your living room for example, you could have a sideboard, dresser, bookshelves, coffee table or a bureau. Obviously these are just examples of the type of furniture that you could have for your home. You could choose to have different shades of the same wood for the dresser and the coffee tables for example. When choosing new items of furniture, one thing to remember is the finish of your armchairs or sofa so that they will complement them.
