Michael Graves' Alessi Kettle.

By Bree Sanderson

Michael Graves designed the Alessi Kettle in 1985. Graves as an architect based in the United States. The Alessi Kettle has now sold more pieces than any other line in the Alessi range, 1.3 million and counting. Alessi is an Italian design company founded by Giovanni Alessi. in 1921. They have pieces in permanent museum collections all around the world and the Alessi kettle is considered by many to be a design classic.

A small bird sits on the top of the kettle, whistling when the contents boil. Yes, a real, old fashioned whistle!. It's made of a high quality stainless steel. (18/10 stainless steel, so called because of the mixture of chromium & nickel metals. The alloy of these two metals enables 18/10 stainless stell to have higher brightness and durability than less inferior grades.)

Because it has a wider base, it means that there is greater surface area to heat up, and thereby boil faster. Michael Graves who is a member of a group of architects known as the The New York Five and has been a lecturer Princeton University for 40 years where he is the Robert Schirmer Professor of Architecture, Emeritus. He has received many awards for his industrial and commercial projects.

Graves has created over 800 designs, many for stores like Target. These have been items ranging from kettles to toilet brushes. The Alessi Kettle is his most famous. Alberto Alessi initially asked him to create a sterling silver tea service. A promotional item not planned to be sold. This "coffee and tea piazza" received much acclaim.

After this, Alessi asked Graves to create a kettle that could be mass marketed something that could retail for approximately $125. In interviews Graves discussed the design phases where the kettle "had to blow water faster than anything else in the market and that it needed to be more realistic for production at about $125 or so a piece."

From these beginning, the Alessi Kettle went on to become a sought after piece, adorning millions of kitchens around the world.
