Nature Cover - A Complete Guide

By Miranda Parker

There are many reasons that make the earth's climate to change. The reasons are categorised into two main groups, namely human causes, and natural causes. While there is nothing much that we can do about natural causes (because, obviously, they are outside of the reach of our hands and control), we might and should be able to do something about human-related causes. In fact, it is because of what we as human do, that make the natural causes to speed up the processes that result in climate change. It is important that we take steps to curb actions that lead to this increase in order to preserve planet earth.

Volcanic eruptions, ocean current, earth orbit change, and solar variations are the natural causes that lead to climatic changes. These in turn will lead to other causes, when again, lead to other changes. An enormous amount of sulphur dioxide (SO2) is discharged every time a volcano erupts. The toxicity of sulphur dioxide is an issue, but the bigger issue that comes out of this is that the earth's atmosphere undergoes a change with the release of gases and particles from the volcano, resulting, in the end, in a drop of the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere. This drop will cause other changes that directly and indirectly affect us, human beings.

The surface of our planet is mostly made of water, and water plays a big role in climatic changes. We have seen how the ocean current has caused phenomena like El Nino. This dreaded phenomenon has produced disasters such as cyclones, hurricanes, heavy rains, floods, and many others.

To add, our planet has the tendency to tilt a little from its axis, and in the process causing the climate to shift somewhat. The strength of the seasons (the intensity of heat in summer and cold in winter) is very much affected by this tilt. That, with the fact that we have solar variation from our sun, makes it all the more feasible for our climate to change accordingly.

Of course, we cannot stop the volcano from erupting. Nor can we prevent El Nino from happening. But there is something that we can do - and that is to stop the activities that can lead to more environmental damages. Since the 19th century when we were having the Industrial Revolution, we have not stopped from misusing our earth's natural precious resources, and all the while emitting toxic gases into our environment. We need to stop, and we need to do it now.

Our World on Fire Podcast is created to make a small difference in the level of awareness people have on the environment. We invite you to join us to make this world better by first understanding the basic issues surrounding the environment. Please continue to join us in this quest.
